Steve was born March 6, 1960 in Redwood Falls to Vernon and Laura Zachow. Steve lived in rural Bird Island until he was three years old when the Zachows moved to a family farm site near Redwood Falls where Steve lived the remainder of his childhood. In his growing up years, Steve enjoyed baseball, snowmobiling, riding go-cart and dirt bike, and playing card games with his family.
Steve attended school in Redwood Falls and graduated high school in 1979; he later went on to attend vocational school in Granite Falls. Steve worked briefly in the fluid power industry in Wichita, Kansas, before returning to Minnesota and making his home in Chaska. There he worked for Beckman Coulter for several years and eventually Holiday, Inc. As a cashier at Holiday, Steve was well-known for remembering the names of hundreds of customers and engaging them in friendly banter to brighten their days and positively impact co-workers and customers alike. Steve was known as someone who would do anything for a friend, and, once you were introduced, he considered you his friend.
Steve was a lifelong fan of Minnesota sports teams, faithfully cheering for the Twins and Vikings through winning and losing seasons. Steve was also a competitive card player—always ready to play—and he rarely found himself on the losing end of any game.
Steve will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his son Drew of Bemidji, and Drew’s children Jacoby, James, and Juniper. Surviving siblings include Charles (Linda) Zachow of Redwood Falls; Darlene Kopischke of St. Peter; Bev (Pat) Wacek of Olivia; Sandy (Bryan) Faulds of Redwood Falls; Gail (Brian) Bielen of Sioux Falls; and brother-in-law Ken (Jeanette) Cornell of Redwood Falls, and many nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and sister Barb Cornell.
Blessed be his memory
