Selma “Sally” Alma Werner, the daughter of Emil and Ida (Redmann) Radunz, was born December 12, 1915 on the family farm near Wood Lake. She grew up on the farm, receiving her formal education in the nearby country school and Wood Lake Public School. Following graduation from eighth grade, Sally worked on the family farm.
In March 1933, Sally married Art Werner. The couple lived on the farm for a short time and then moved into Wood Lake where Sally began working as a telephone operator. In 1943, the Werners moved to Redwood Falls; there, the day Sally dropped her youngest child off at Kindergarten she began employment at Hanson’s Rexall Drug as a soda jerk. Sally was employed at the drug store for 43 years. Sally spent her leisure time gardening and sewing; she taught her daughters to sew on the old treadle machine and shared her love of kohlrabi with them. She had beautiful flowers around the family’s home – tulips on one side and begonias on the other. Sally was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the women’s groups there. She loved traveling with the banks’ “Prime-timers” and enjoyed trips to both coasts, Alaska and Hawaii.
Sally is survived by her daughter Meredyth (Lee) Ness of Chisago City; daughter-in-law Grace Werner of Outing; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Art in 1983, son Dean in 2003, and daughter Geraldine “Gerry” in 2006.
Blessed be her memory.
