Mary Phillips, age 54, was born on February 9, 1964 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, to Dwight and Alice Phillips. She was the youngest of five children who grew up on the family farm south of Redwood Falls. Mary graduated from Redwood Falls High School. As a young adult, she moved into a REM group home, with housemates and staff who she enjoyed as her extended family for the past 29 years. Mary worked at several different jobs through the years, arranged by Service Enterprises (SEI).
Mary was a social and outgoing person who loved chatting, teasing and parties. She always made sure others were comfortable. Mary liked to vacation at the lake and fish, inheriting the title Miss Birch Lake and learning to drive a pontoon boat later in life. In addition, she enjoyed traveling with her family around the U.S., on holidays and in the summer.
Mary liked scrapbooking, baking, coloring and developing her unique sense of fashion. Her dream job was being a secretary, and she applied her office skills at home, at SEI and with her family. Mary was known for her cheerfulness and one-liners.
She is survived by her siblings and their spouses, Emily Phillips (George Parker), George Phillips, Tom Phillips, and Nancy Phillips (Jerry Kovacs); her nephew, Aaron Parker; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
