Maria “Marie” Butenhoff, 93, of Redwood Falls died Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2012 from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Danube with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Nelson Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and will continue at the church on Friday from 10 until 11 a.m.

Maria Magdeline Hattie Butenhoff, the daughter of George and Marie (Simon) Hammerschmidt, was born February 14, 1919 in Wanda. She grew up in the Wabasso and Wanda area and received her formal education in Wanda School District 94 and Lucan School District 113. Marie was an active 4-H club member in her youth.

On November 16, 1938, Marie married Carlton Schmidt and they resided in Wabasso before moving to Redwood Falls. They also lived in St. Cloud for a time. While living in Redwood Falls, Marie was employed at the Mint Café, the V.F.W., and Federal Land Bank.

On July 3, 1970, Marie married Leland Butenhoff in Watertown, South Dakota. They lived on a farm south of Danube for 28 years before moving to an apartment in Redwood Falls.

Marie was a 56-plus year member of the VFW Auxiliary and volunteered at many banquets. She was an accomplished seamstress and sewed all her children’s clothing, as well as their prom dresses and other special outfits. Marie was an excellent cook and loved to bake. She enjoyed music, singing and dancing. Marie and Lee had a country/old time band for 40 years and performed at many area events. She also enjoyed reading and playing Bingo. Marie was an avid Elvis fan. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Danube.

Marie is survived by her husband Leland Butenhoff of Redwood Falls; children Myron “Mike” Schmidt of Redwood Falls, and Karen (Larry) Hoff of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings Bert Hammerschmidt of New Ulm, Leah Dolezal of Redwood Falls, Reynold “Swede” Hammerschmidt of Redwood Falls, Melvin (Lorraine) Hammerschmidt of Lamberton, Elaine (Norman) Rudenick of Redwood Falls, and Marcelinus “Marcy” Hammerschmidt of Redwood Falls. She was preceded in death by her son Stanley, her daughter Deloria, three brothers, and four sisters.
