Knud Basballe

Knud Salomon Basballe Jr., age 83, of Morgan, Minnesota passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Garnette Gardens in Redwood Falls. Knud was born on November 22, 1941, to Knud and Mildred (Christianson) Basballe in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. 

Knud was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Morgan. He attended a country school one mile west of the family farm for six years. Knud graduated from Morgan High School in 1959. He attended Ag School at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul where he met and started dating Janette Smith. In 1960, Knud joined the Minnesota Army National Guard, where he proudly served six years. In addition, Knud began farming with his parents on the family farm. On July 6, 1963, he married Janette Smith of Redwood Falls.

Knud raised cattle and hogs, and grew corn and soybeans. He also sold seed to area farmers until his retirement in 2007. Knud was active in organizations such as Redwood County Cattlemen and the Pork Producers. He was an active life long member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served on church council and other committees. He volunteered with Friends of Gilfillan and helped with many projects. 

Knud loved fishing and was happiest when he was on the water or ice. He enjoyed spending time at their Lake Koronis trailer. He often fished from the resort docks and would help kids and others by giving them advice and fishing tips. Knud frequently shared his beloved homemade “Toby” jigs. While Knud’s true passion was fishing, he also loved to hunt for deer, turkey, pheasants, and ducks. Last year he shot his deer and had it loaded up within an hour of the season opening. Knud was blessed with several good hunting dogs. He loved being outdoors in God’s creation. Knud enjoyed traveling and visited many different states, two of his most memorable trips included Alaska and Hawaii. 

Knud is survived by his wife, Janette; children, Laura Basballe of Apple Valley, Doug (Tracy) Basballe of Mankato, and David (Jennifer) Basballe of Beavercreek, Ohio; grandchildren, Damien, Alexis, Tre, and Kaylee; siblings, Betty (Ed) Martin, Paul (Cheryl) Basballe, and Carl (Janet) Basballe. He his preceded in death by his parents, Knud Sr. And Mildred. 

Visitation will be held from 10:30 am until 1:00 pm with memorial service held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Morgan. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Kickin’ Cancer, or local food shelves: We Care or Redwood Area Food Shelf.
