John Iver Mahlum, the son of Nelse Mathias Mahlum and Gertrude (Cheney) Mahlum, was born May 13, 1929 in his parents’ home in Morton. Jack lived in that house his entire life. He received his formal education in Morton Public School, graduating on May 29, 1947. As a young man, Jack worked for his father in the Farmers State Bank of Morton.
On October 16, 1949, Jack married Gladys Krueger in Olivia. They made their home and raised their family in Morton, and also spent summers at their cabin on Island Lake near Longville. Jack continued in the banking business, ultimately becoming owner of Farmers State Bank. He sold the bank and retired from banking in 1972. At that time he entered the building and construction business where he operated Royal Lumber Company and Morton Systems. Jack fully retired in 1981 and he and Gladys began extending their summers at the lake. Jack enjoyed being with family and friends at the cabin built by his grandfather.
He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Morton. Jack served as a member of the Morton Fire Department and was a member of the city council. He was a proud supporter of Morton athletics over the years.
Jack is survived by his children Kay Berger (and Randy Lothert) of Brandon, South Dakota, Mary Mark Patten (and husband Mark) of Chatfield, John S.
