Hartzel Sorenson, the son of William and Minda (Teppen) Sorenson, was born on the family farm near Louisburg on January 3, 1916. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Louisburg through the eighth grade when he quit to help run the family farm.
On September 8, 1941, Hartzel married Juliette M. Redfield near Appleton. They lived and farmed in the Louisburg area and he became District Storage Supervisor for ASC. In 1957 they moved to Redwood Falls and in the early 1960s he became the manager for Parker Sanders Farms. Hartzel retired in 1988.
As a youth Hartzel was baptized, confirmed and graduated from Sunday school in the Louisburg Lutheran Church. When he was only 12 years old he rode the train to St. Paul – all by himself in a boxcar with his 4-H steer. They were headed for the State Fair where Hartzel showed his steer, which won first place in its class. After quitting school and working the family farm, he attended “tractor school” learning the mechanic trade. Hartzel was very active in 4-H, both as a youth and later as a leader with his wife Juliette. He learned to golf when in his 60s and belonging to the Redwood Falls Golf Club for a number of years. He introduced his grandchildren to the sport, spending time with them both on and off the course. Hartzel loved his family – they were first and foremost in his life. After he retired he took up fretwork, giving pieces of his work to all the family members and the church. Hartzel also loved to spend time with his coffee group playing “21” for coffee, and keeping impeccable records of his winnings and losses. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls.
Hartzel Sorenson died Thursday, August 16, 2012 in the Seasons Hospice House in Redwood Falls. He had attained the age of 96 years, 7 months and 16 days, or as he said it “96 and ½ years.”
He is survived by his two daughters; Janice (Bob) Burns of Nisswa and Eloise (Bob) Stancer of Plymouth; a daughter-in-law Valarie Sorenson of Plymouth; grandchildren Craig (Heidi) Fink, Marc (Maggie) Fink, Chad (Regan) Stancer, Nicole (Brendan) Bush, Amanda Sorenson, and Michael Sorenson; and great-grandchildren Wyatt Fink, Whitney Fink, Sophie Fink, Isaac Fink, Mya Stancer, and Grayson Bush. He was preceded his wife of 66 years, Juliette, on January 15, 2008; his son Bruce in 2009; and his 3 brothers and sisters.
Blessed be his memory.
