Blanche Mary Stevenson Ross, the daughter of John D. and Alice Abbie (Gray) Stevenson, was born August 13, 1921 in Delhi. She married Ray Ross in 1943 and the couple moved to Nyack in 1946. Blanche worked in the accounts payable department at Orange & Rockland Utilities for 19 years, retiring in 1980. After her retirement, Blanche spent winters in Apache Junction, Arizona but always returned to Nyack and her beloved home on Haven Court for the other seasons of the year.
Formerly a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nyack, Blanche was most recently an active member of the Congers Presbyterian Church; while in Arizona, she was a faithful worshipper at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Apache Junction. She was a life member of the Nyack Community Ambulance Corps, the Willis Polhemus V.F.W. Post 9215 Auxiliary of Upper Nyack, the Minesceongo Rebekah Lodge IOOF #441 of Stony Point, and the Nyack Orangetown Senior Citizens.
Blanche was a warm and loving soul known for her faith, her friendship and her beautiful gardens. Her friends could always count on her as she enjoyed helping others. Blanche loved to entertain and her annual Fourth of July and Labor Day picnics were well attended and loved by all her friends and family. Blanche and Ray had a great love for America and they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their RV. Blanche also enjoyed sharing adventures in the southwest U.S. with family and friends; she knew all the best places to take visitors. Blanche will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her sister Alice Griffith of Olivia; brother-in-law Robert Whittet of Redwood Falls; and nieces and nephews Ruth (Larry) Wittmers, Robert (Diane) Zaske, Steve (Kathi) Whittet, Tom Whittet, Marcia (Doug) Schiller, and John (Sue) Gribbon and their families. Blanche is also survived by her “Nyack family” whom she adopted in 1947: Richard Ambrey, Michael and Kathryn (Ambrey) McDermott, Rosemary and Thomas Ambrey, Tim, Nancy (McDermott) and Matthew Surridge, Michael, Tracy, Harper and Lily McDermott, Tomas Ambrey and Carolyn Ambrey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray in 1989; her brothers John and Harold Stevenson; and her sisters Sarah Stevenson Gribbon, and Grace Stevenson Whittet.
Blessed be her memory.
